About the Universe

For as long as people have walked the Earth, they have looked up at the stars in the night sky. Farmers have sown and harvested crops according to the phases of the Moon. Explorers and sailors have chartered their courses across deserts, forests, and open seas with the aid of the stars. Those who studied the stars were sometimes thought to be magical and wise - wizards who tried to understand the remote and beautiful night skies; even today, astronomy embodies both the practical and the romantic, the understandable and the mysterious. Almost every culture has studied the skies. The Babylonians first grouped the stars into constellations; the Chaldeans and Egyptians used astronomical observations to calculate the length of the year as 365.25 days; the Greeks determined the circumference of the Earth and catalogued 1,080 stars, grouping them by their brightness (or magnitude).

MOON PHASES

The NEW MOON cannot be seen from the Earth. This is a Sun-Moon conjunction. Because the Sun cannot illuminate the Moon, it appears like there is no moon. This is a time of fresh energy, seed planting and the beginning of new ventures and impulses. The WAXING CRESCENT occurs when less than half the Moon is visible and looks like a like a fine crescent that gets a little fatter every day. In the Southern Hemisphere the waxing crescent is illuminated on its left or western side ...

Aristotle: " the natural motion of the earth as a whole, like that of its parts, is towards the center of the Universe: that is the reason why it is now lying at the center."
Giethe: "Of all discoveries and opinions, none may have exerted a greater effect on the human spirit than the doctrine of Copernicus. The world had scarcely become known as round and complete in itself when it was asked to waive the tremendous privilege of being the center of the universe...

As the Moon moves through the Sidereal Zodiac in its 27-day cycle, it triggers the four traditional elements of Fire, Earth, Air and Water in turn. Each element has been shown to encourage a certain type of plant growth, depicted by the icons on each point of the triangles...

Books on Stargazing
In his 'Agriculture' lectures, Rudolf Steiner makes numerous references to old peasant wisdom and the influences of planets on humans and on plants and planting. Here is a version of a 15th century book called ' The Book of the Seven Planets'. It is interesting to read how planet influences were regarded in the medieval days.

The Solar System has nine planets that orbit the big star called the Sun. All the planets orbit the Sun in elliptical paths. They take different amounts of time to get all the way around the Sun. Our Earth takes a year to make one complete orbit. This is the length of time it takes the Earth to get all the way around the Sun. The planets spin while they move around the Sun...

It was something no living person had seen before. At 3.07pm yesterday, the moment scientists calculated long ago, a tiny black dot appeared on the edge of the sun. (Sydney Morning Herald)
