SATURN  - The Bringer of Old Age
Essence: warmth

Statistics:
Orbit: 1,429,400,000 km (9.54 AU) from Sun
Diameter: 120,536 km (equatorial)
Mass: 5.68e26 kg
Sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest.
Most distant planet from Earth in the Steiner universe:
“Now the ancients rightly considered Saturn the most distant planet from our solar system; it is the farthest away. From the standpoint of materialistic astronomy it is quite justified to add Uranus and Neptune to our system; but they have a different origin and do not belong to the solar system; so that we may speak of Saturn as the outermost planet of our system.” (Cosmic and Human Metamorphosis, 1989, pp. 65-69)

Mythology:
In Roman mythology, Saturn is the god of agriculture. The associated Greek god, Cronus, was the son of Uranus and Gaia and the father of Zeus (Jupiter). Saturn is the root of the English word 'Saturday'. The planet has been known since prehistoric times. Galileo was the first to observe it with a telescope in 1610. Christiaan Huygens discovered the rings in 1659.

Composition:
75% hydrogen and 25% helium with traces of water, methane, ammonia and a rocky core. Interior is very hot ( 12000 K at the core). Saturn radiates more energy into space than it receives from the Sun. Saturn has a significant magnetic field.

Polarity:
First polarity: Saturn - Moon with Sun as the Middle
Saturn, as the furthest planet from Earth opens up into the Cosmos and the world of star spirituality. The Moon, as the closest heavenly body to Erath, reflects Ether close to Earth.

Spiritual aspects:
According to Steiner Saturn is connected with 'warmth' which he sees as the most spiritual element. By means of this warmth blood and bone can be formed and the planet is closely associated with the spleen. Saturn radiates through the body as a 'Spiritual Ego' and so connects the spiritual with the physical. At the same time Saturn also extracts the spiritual out of the physical. For this reason Saturn is seen as the planet of death and resurrection. The spiritual turning to the physical leads to death and the physical releasing the spiritual brings about incarnation. Saturn is effective working from the outer perimeter. Preparation 507 (Valerian) connects to Saturn. Applied to the compost heap it turns the spiritual inwards. In turn this compost can bring healing tom the soil.
