Trees have bark to protect the delicate cambium layer from bump, cuts and animal damage.To retard the loss of water. To protect from temperature extremes. To protect from intense sunlight.
A large evergreen tree. Bark is rough, fissured and grey-brown. Leaves alternate or in whorls (clusters, with gaps along the stem between each cluster), and glossy dark green with an abruptly tapered pointed tip and wavy edges.
Buffalo Fly (Haematobia exigua) 
Buffalo flies are usually found on the backs of cattle and only leave the host reluctantly. They usually only leave briefly to lay their eggs in fresh dung.

This is a 'strange' pumpkin crop that somehow popped up. We cut the pumpkins, filled them into a big bin with water and yeast. The idea is to make vinegar and use it for weed control.

Camphor experiment suggested by Alan Johnston. The idea is to back the camphor around the trunk. Jason has actually ring barked the tree.
