PECANS:
Most of the pecans are bearing fruit. some trees are fruiting much
better than others. Each nut is imbedded in a pod hat pens into four equal
sections to release the nut. The ideal time to pick the nut is just
before it would drop out of its pod naturally. Picking nuts before that
time, that is when the pod has not naturally opened, not only diminishes
the taste but also leaves a dark stain on the fingers that it IMPOSSIBLE
to remove. This stain comes from a fragrant oils that seems to be only
in the fleshy part of the pod and not in the nut itself. In the future
we will have to time our brush-cutting around the pecans in such a way
that the grass is very low at the time of harvest. In this way we will
be able to pick up the nuts that naturally have fallen rather than pluck
them of he trees. Some of the trees are 5 to 6 meters high. The trees
look very strong and healthy, showing ego.

CAMPHOR EXPERIMENT:
Three weeks ago we cut four camphor trees. Three we
treated in this way: drilled a 1inch whole deep into the tree stump
and filled it with salt. Then we wrapped cling film around the stumps.
The result is interesting. The stumps are shooting but the shoots are
severely retarded. I think the shoots will ultimately break through
the cling film but they may not be as strong as they normally would be.
It may also help to wrap paper under the cling film to cut out the
light.

PEOPLE GARDEN: Substantial
progress has been made. The shelter is nearly finished. George's done a
great job, although Hubert feels that there should be four more corners.
(He may be right) All the plants are growing well. We've added a mandarin,
lime and two cumquat trees as well as various palms and fruit trees. The
palms were dedicated to an old friend: Mr Karl Steffens. We quite like the
idea of dedicating trees to people. Linda has dedicated a Mexican Tree
fern that we planted on Orchard Hill to her mother.
